- A faculty member of Seneca Polytechnic’s Broadcast – Television program identified a need to share video tutorials and learning segments with students in a way that would be easily connected to the functions on specific pieces of audio mixing equipment, such as a Zoom F8 and a Yamaha TF1.Â
- Students do have access to these pieces of equipment in class, but they often do not have this equipment outside of the audio mixing labs.Â
- An augmented reality (AR) application was proposed that would project a virtual model of the Zoom or Yamaha mixing console onto a real environment through a smart device with a camera (mobile phone, tablet, etc.).Â
- Each model would be designed with “hot spots” on parts of the console that had specific functions. Once the learner touches/interacts with these hot spots, it would launch a video tutorial in-app to demonstrate its function.Â
- This option was chosen as it would be easily accessible to students on their personal smart devices so that learning and study could take place outside of the lab setting.Â
- Virtual 3D models of the Zoom F8 and Yamaha TF1 audio mixing consoles were created to scale to be as relatable to the learners as possible.Â
- Hot spot areas on the models were created and highlighted in red to stand out. Once each hot spot is interacted with, it then turns from red to green to show that it has been completed.Â
- An assessment was also built into the AR application for learners to test their knowledge of the functions that they reviewed in the video tutorials.Â
- A log-in feature was developed where student’s progress and assessment scoring will be sent to their instructors.Â
